FrontPage 98

There are 2 different programs that make up Frontpage98.

The FrontPage Explorer is just like windows explorer (Not Internet Explorer). It's basically a file manager. You can create new files, delete files, move files etc. When you double-click (left mouse button) on a .htm or .html file the FrontPage Editor opens up to edit that particular file or page.

The FrontPage Editor is the program that you use to edit your web pages. It's similar to Microsoft WordŽ or Microsoft PublisherŽ. HTML doesn't have the capabilities to allow you to drag an image or paragraph to any old spot on the page. There are limits to the hypertext Markup Language (HTML). We're not about to go into html code here, but there are a number of HTML tutorial's on the web.

There are 2 different ways you can use Frontpage98.

1) Edit your website online. This is the best technique if your website hosting company has the FrontPage server extensions installed (Cscape does) and if you need to edit your site from more than one location (from home and from the office for instance) This method is NOT available to FrontPage Express users.

2) Edit your site locally (On your computer) and publish your site to the server. This method works best if you're completely redoing your site and don't want your visitors to see your site while it's under construction. Note many of the FrontPage "bots" (things like counters and message boards) may not work on your computer. "Bots" require the FrontPage server extensions in order to work  If you choose to edit your site locally you will first need to download your site to your local computer (unless of course you have already designed your site and stored it locally).  To download your site to your local computer use the "import" function in Frontpage98.  Once you have edited your site and are ready to publish simply use the "publish" funtion available in Frontpage98.

Frontpage98 introduced a concept called a FrontPage Web. A FrontPage Web is a package, or container, for all of the various files that make up a website. Examples of files that make up a website would be images, (.jpg or .gif  for instance) sounds, (.midi or .wav) animations (.avi) and the glue that holds all of these types of files... the html documents (.htm, .html etc)

FrontPage Express

FrontPage Express is a "light" version of FrontPage and is included with Windows98. FrontPage Express is basically Frontpage98 without the FrontPage explorer FrontPage Express cannot open a FrontPage "Web" it can only open single html files on your local drive(s) or network drives. Once you have designed your new site, or edited a single html file from your existing site you will need to use Microsoft's Publishing Wizard (or any other ftp program) to publish (ftp) your site to the web.  You can also edit any page on the internet by clicking the "Edit" button in Internet Explorer however you must have your own FrontPage web in order to save your page.
